The defining theme of the third edition of the International Photobiennial Ostend, chosen by curator Stephane Verheye, is ‘LIGHT’. Every photograph begins with light. It reveals shapes, suggests depth, creates contrasts and inspires emotion. As a technical, symbolic and poetic instrument, light comprises the very essence of the photographic gaze – it is the tool with which photographers 'write'.
More than thirty renowned Belgian and international photographers explore this universal theme along an impressive route stretching from Fort Napoleon to Ostend’s Anglican church. Their interpretations take the form of indoor exhibitions and striking urban interventions, all dedicated to conceptual and contemporary photography – transforming the city into one immense platform for visual experimentation.
