Valérie Naessens rediscovered her rhythm through the lens of her camera in 2017. Ever since, she has shown a preference for overcast light that animates the narrative quality in her images. She gives her subjects the time they need to mature, and this patient process is reflected in her work: tranquil, atmospheric and subtly unsettling. Instead of recording reality, she extracts only those fragments that resonate with her inner world. Valérie creates images in delicate hues, with a cinematic feel, suffused with emotion. Her pictures often play with focus and grain, giving them an analogue, almost painterly quality. She deliberately limits post-processing to what would be achievable in a darkroom. In this way, she is gradually shaping a poetic universe where emotion and atmosphere matter more than perfection.
